Friends... this week was an epic budget breakdown. My MOH Chelsea was visiting from Seattle and goodness gracious did we have fun. Eating out every night, multiple drinks and insisting on picking up the tab was great for my heart/mind/soul/overall well being, but bad for my wallet.

I have zero regrets, but it looks like it might be a ramen noodle kind of week. All that spending plus the normal expenses ($80 on groceries) really put me in the hole.

Budget recap (1/13-1/20)

Well, this week was quite eventful. I treated Stephen to a night out and man did it cost me. It really put into perspective just how much Stephen spent each week when we first started dating. Man... he must have really liked me. Luckily we had so much fun that it was worth every penny.

I took Stephen out to one of our favorite spots, Toro Bravo. Who knew that paying the whole tab would liquidate my entire budget? Oh well, it was worth it.

If you don't get to Toro the second it opens you're looking at an hour wait at least. We spent our 2 hours having drinks and listening to music at The Secret Society next door. The drawing is from here.

Big spender week for us. We got: a dozen eggs, fake ground beef, apples, bananas, seaweed snacks, bok choy, salad, apple cider vinegar, cereal, almond milk, cows milk, red wine vinegar, shampoo, toothpaste, dish soap, brussel sprouts, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, tortillas, green chilies, black olives, baby beets and tomato soup.

As part of our date, I let Stephen pick the movie.... enough said.

This was definitely a week where I cut it close to the grain. Unfortunately for my budget, but not for me, this week is shaping up to be just as eventful. Oh well, it's just paper and ink, right?

Before I get to my budget post I had to share a new video from Nike (I like to watch them for inspiration). I was a little skeptical when I first heard about Nike FuelBand, but just like this commercial the product makes me want to get up and move. How about you!?

The film is a not-so-gentle reminder that women should shape their own stories and that the media isn't necessarily the best evidence of our power.

It's baaaaack! You may notice over the next few weeks that I'm not spending as much as my budget allows. Well, like I said, the holidays were a bit mean to my budget so I'm scaling back just a bit. I think I did a good job this week...

We got*: pomegranates, apples, bananas, potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, salad, brussel sprouts, soy milk, cow's milk, bread, seaweed snacks, oranges, soup, olives and coconut water. * note that Stephen also went on our monthly Costco run ($50) where we got: salmon burgers, frozen shrimp, cheddar cheese, frozen pizzas, artichoke hearts and body wash

Remember my too-pretty-for-words friend Robyn? She had her bachelorette party this weekend and man was it fun. I'll keep it real and say that ALL the $50 went to booze; but come on, after $25 worth it becomes pretty entertaining...

Super chic on the cheap

So after my Kauai post I received quite a few messages from people who were genuinely curious why I picked the super pricey Hyatt if I'm on such a tight budget. I totally get the confusion! Here's how I'm doing it...

The Hyatt Credit Card! You get two free nights at any Hyatt when you sign up.

No blackout dates.

Seriously.

The $400+ a night to stay at the Hyatt makes me want to vom, so when Ashley's man Dustin found out about the card Stephen and I were intrigued. With a fair bit of apprehension we signed up.

I can honestly say that we all got exactly what we expected. There were ZERO problems. We got the dates and rooms we wanted for what amounted to $70 each in annual fees*. With Stephen and I each getting a card we are able to stay four nights in one of Kauai's nicest resort for a total of $140. That is seriously unheard of when you realize that an average hotel rate on the island is $180 per night!

If you're contemplating a trip, but high hotel costs are holding you back I sincerely recommend getting this card. It enables you to get luxury on a dime!

*this may be super bad Karma, but we're all just going to cancel our cards once our trip is over...

Wedding Wednesday: A simple bouquet

Stephen and I are knee deep in wedding budgets (shoot me). The current goal is to figure out what is worth spending big bucks on and what we could give a rip about. While some items are a little bit of debate (come on photographers, WHY are basic packages the cost of a down payment!?), one item we can agree on is flowers.

I like flowers as much as the next person, but when I heard that $100+ for a bridal bouquet wasn't unusual I stood slack-jawed and more than a little shocked. In response (retaliation?) I started looking up inexpensive, DIY bouquets and was so happy to see that simple bouquets can be just as pretty as the big-budget ones.

Travel Plans: Kauai

Only two weeks after we return from Italy (see destinations here and here), Stephen and I are off to the island of Kauai for a destination wedding.

Remember Kristy and Sean? They're having an amazingly beautiful and intimate ceremony on the island. Even though our workplaces weren't thrilled that we'd be taking time off again, we were lucky enough to be able to RSVP "yes" to this extremely exciting event.

Hey, remember when I used to update you with weekly posts about my budget? Yeah, me neither.

To be honest, the holidays hit and my budget went wacky. I still pulled money out for my envelopes, but it was less than usual because of gift purchases. When I was in California I didn't pull money out at all. I don't want to consider the month of December a TOTAL failure; however, it wasn't my best budgeting moment.

I promise I'll be back at it again now that crunch time for savings has officially begun (um hello, now we have a wedding coming too!). Thanks so much for baring with me!

Travel light

When I lived in Italy I traveled all over Europe. It taught me many things, but one lesson that has stuck with me through the years is to travel light. I don't own a rolling suitcase and if it can't fit in carry-on then it's not coming. Friends often look at my bag and say "that's it?!" Not to be weird, but it always gives me a thrill.

My regular duffel was getting worse for the wear, so for Christmas my parents got me this amazing bag for all the trips I have lined up for 2012. Isn't it great!? I can't wait to throw two weeks of clothes in here and jet off (to here, here, and more)!

2011 Top 10

I'm easing back to work this morning, but my mind keeps wandering back to all the wonderful adventures I had in 2011. I am SO lucky and feel a little overwhelmed looking back at it all (thinking, "I can't believe I did all that!). Every moment was great, but here are my top ten favorites of the past year:

This summer Stephen and I went to four weddings. It was amazing to see so many of our friends find a happy ending to being single and a wonderful beginning of married life.

Going to this Counting Crows concert is a bit of a tradition for Stephen and I. Every time we go we have a total blast, this year was no exception.

I conquered my (silly) fear of biking. Sure I haven't been back in the saddle since, but I proved that I could do it!

I went to Arizona for a long weekend to visit my mom. It was a nice break from the rain of Portland.

Going to the Northern Washington coast with my parents was probably the most relaxing thing I did all year. I find bring by the ocean restorative. Plus, no internet or phone service made it really feel like you were away.

From the ambush my work friends concocted to the romantic dinner with Stephen turning a quarter century older was a total thrill.

Seeing my Italy girls was amazing. Seeing them in Nashville was a dream. The city is so amazing and touring it with new baby Abigail in tow was such a treat.

Going to DC to see my good friend Aly was a total blast. The city is so vibrant and it had been WAY too long since Al and I had been together.

Stephen and I's first big trip together was so relaxing and fun (minus my heat rash...).

Getting engaged and having such a romantic 3 year anniversary is going to be in my top favorite memories forever and it definitely was the best part of 2011. Such a sweet, dreamlike ending to the year.

I hope you all are able to look back at 2011 with fondness. Here's to a beautiful, healthy and joyful 2012!

Two New Years

Because Stephen and I fly back to Portland New Years Eve we decided to be noncommittal when people invited us to parties. We wanted to give ourselves permission to go to bed early without stepping on any toes.

No matter if we're in or out I know it will be amazing. Even more amazing if I could ring in 2012 with one of these dream outfits...

Shred your leftovers and use them to as padding future boxes or gift bags

Make fancy bows for next year's gifts by using the scraps from the carnage of 2011.

Make pretty thank you cards like this one out of small scraps. You could also just cover the front of a card if cutting out shapes isn't your strongest crafting skill.

I hope you can all find fun, creative ways to reuse your gift wrap. I think a quiet day of crafting in our pajamas is just what we need...

Post-holiday hangover care

Badger sweatshirt will tell people that I don't give a shiz that it's 3 p.m. and I'm not dressed; mint tea will calm my angry tummy; the elastic waistband in these comfy jammies will accommodate holiday weight; and these slippers will give my feet a break after days of high heels.

The holidays always leave me feeling worn down like after a marathon. Only instead of running I was eating and instead of competing I was drinking. That's why after the celebrations have concluded I like to sit in my war zone of wrapping paper and relax.

Our engagement story

Alright, it's finally here. I'm sorry to keep you waiting, but am so happy to share our engagement story...

We got back from our anniversary trip Sunday afternoon. After some activity on the mountain (and subsequently the bars) we were definitely in need of a quiet day. So we spent the day doing laundry, lounging on the couch and running errands. Around dusk, Stephen suggested that we go on a walk since we'd been sitting around all day. I wasn't thrilled with the idea, but knew I'd feel better if I got moving. I threw on my ugliest, puffiest red coat and went out into the cold.

Stephen and I live by the waterfront so we decided to walk the esplanade, our usual route. As we strolled along we talked about our weekend and the past three years we'd spent together. He'd ask me my favorite parts and I'd tell him I couldn't pick. We laughed about how we came to be a couple instead of just friends and dreamed up alternate lives for our cats if we didn't adopt them.

I didn't suspect a thing as we walked along until Stephen suggest taking the "scenic" way home. Didn't he know it was cold?! But I humored him because it was still our anniversary celebration. So we turned off the beaten path to go through Pettygrove Park, behind our house. I honestly had no idea at this point. I was just thinking, "man, Stephen is taking this anniversary thing seriously. Look at him and his romantic detour. So cute."

Once we got into the park we started being our usual silly selves. I was singing songs I made up and we were dancing around like fools. Pretty standard. In the spot you see below, Stephen twirled me out. I left his hand leave mine. As I turned around I saw him down on one knee.

My hands flew up to my face. The first (horribly unromantic, but oh-so-Sara) words out of my mouth were "Don't fuck with me." I was SO surprised I thought he was joking! Worst joke ever, right? As Stephen began to tell me just how much I mean to him I honestly can't tell you what I was thinking or feeling. It was like I was so present in what was happening I couldn't identify emotions.

Then he asked, "Will you marry me?" And I just threw myself down and into his arms, burying my face into his neck. I was so happy and overcome with joy that I just wanted to be next to him. He pulled away and asked, "Wait, was that a yes?" Through sniffles I said, "Of course!" and he slipped the ring on my finger. Then hand in hand we walked (oh, okay, I may have been skipping) home to call our family and closest friends.

Later, when I told my best friend how it happened (after screams and crying) she said, "Aw, perfect. That is so you two."

The magnitude of what happened that night didn't sink in for me until a few days later. It was such a surreal moment that I kept thinking it was a dream. Stephen has been in my life for so many years and through the three that we've been a couple he has become my best friend, my biggest cheerleader, my favorite comedian and the single best part of my day, every day.

I feel so blessed that we get to spend the rest of our lives together.

Three year anniversary recap

Kristy's Romantic Proposal

So while you're waiting for me to get my act together with posting my proposal story, I thought I would share one from my dear friend Kristy to satiate you. Do you remember her and Sean from the engagement photos I posted? They're the super attractive, hilarious couple. I know, right?

She recently submitted their story to a contest (which, although I'm bias, I think they totally should win). Read it below and go to the site to vote for them so they win an at-home party to kick off their destination wedding!

Kristy+Sean took a vacation to the Columbia Gorge, a beautiful region of Oregon. They went to a historic Hotel to explore the gardens. As they explored the top of a waterfall, Sean found the perfect spot to propose. He asked Kristy if she would like to sit down on the bench. Kristy declined, as she was busy taking photographs of the waterfall. Again, Sean asked Kristy to join him on the bench, so she obliged. He told her that he bought her a Spring Break present. This seemed a little bizarre. He pulled out a children's book titled "I Like You", which had sentimental meaning. On the inside, Sean had carved a square hole in the pages of the book to make a shadow box. He tied the ring to ribbon in the hole. Kristy opened the book, read the letter, and saw the stunning ring. Sean got down on one knee and officially proposed. Of course, she said "Yes!"

Le sigh! So romantic, huh?!

Today is my and Stephen's three year anniversary! Every day is such a blessing together that three years just seems like an embarrassment of riches. I truly feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have my boyfriend be my best friend, biggest supporter and favorite person.

Even though this week has been busy, I'm taking the evening off to celebrate all the joy Stephen brings to my life. Plus, this Saturday we're off to a lodge at Mount Hood to really celebrate. Can't wait to share photos!

Yesterday I felt a cold coming on-- fast. Sore throat, achy bones and the overwhelming need to sleep. When I told Stephen he immediately asked what he could do (isn't he the best?!). I had a ready response: I want vegetarian Phở.

I cannot tell you how filled with happiness and gratitude I was when I saw a bowl waiting for me after a 14 hour day (work and class). Now that my friends is true love.

Travel Plans: Porto San Stefano, Italy

After Stephen and I go to Siena we're headed South to Porto San Stefano for water-side fun. Because I lived in Italy for a little while, it was super important to me that this trip be filled with unique experiences. That's why we picked this town that's not usually on the American tourist radar. We're giddy with excitement (or at least I am... I wouldn't say that Stephen gets "giddy").

Ah! Sun and water together makes me light up. That's our hotel in the upper left :)

I can't wait to lay out with good book...

Have any of you been this area? I would love tips if you have them (although there's a real possibility that I won't do anything but lounge, swim and sleep).

Budget recap (11/4-11/11)

This week totally flew by for me. Thankfully my iPhone photos reminded me of what I spent my money on...

Breakfast at Starbucks, two soup lunches at work, and 2 lattes. Not bad, but sort of sad how fast $30 goes on not-too-awesome food...

Stephen did all the shopping for me this week and I think he did a great job! Here's what he got:

tomatoes, tomato soup, onion, seaweed snacks, cat food (10 cans), veggie sausages, apples, toilet paper, coffee, salad mix, bread, and cow's milk.

We're not convinced that Shakespeare was a fraud, but we know that we really liked this movie. Totally worth it (plus popcorn).

I intentionally didn't spend too much money this week because I'm helping throw a bridal shower Sunday and I need a little cushion in the envelopes. I'll sacrifice on quite a bit in the name of my budget, but good champagne for the bride is not one of them.

As some of you may remember, I have been budgeting for the past two months in order to save for some amazing trips Stephen and I are taking next year. Instead of only thinking about the short term sacrifices (ex: free office coffee this morning instead of the latte I want) I thought it might be nice to take a step back and remember what it's all for.

One vacation we're going on is to Italy (!!!). While there we're going to stay a few days in the Tuscan countryside right outside of Siena. Below is the villa we're staying at and some plans we've made for our time there.

Fattoria di Cavaglioni is about 20 minutes outside Siena. It was orginally a farm that has been converted to a guest villa. Stephen and I booked it because we have always wanted to experience the Tuscan countryside. Doesn't it look amazing?! Sometimes I just stare at the photos online when I'm feeling blue.

The region around Siena is known for its Chianti, so I imagine a huge proportion of our time will be spent tasting the local flavor. Siena also has a beautiful cathedral and its Piazza del Campo supposedly has great people watching. Can't you just image grabbing a slice of authentic pizza and watching beautiful Italians strolling by? Perfection.

Posting these photos makes me so excited and puts all the small budgeting sacrifices in perspective. Only seven more months until I'm there!!

Have any of you ever been to Siena? If so, I would LOVE some travel advice!

Budget recap (10/28-11/3)

This was quite a week! With Halloween and a slight lull in work I was not short in fun or expenditures. Check it out:

Pictured: Brunch at Stepping Stone Cafe, dinner at Ciao Vito, lunch at Cafe Yumm. Not pictured: 3 lattes and one oatmeal for breakfast

Exfoliator and hair serum, $30 each

Drinks: 3 bottles of wine. Entertainment: Felt to make my costume (Robin Hood!) and Stephen's costume from Good Will (Quagmire from family guy)

At Trader Joes and the farmer's market we got: Seaweed snacks, bananas, apples, raspberries, tomato soup, cat food, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, sweet potatoes, veggie sausages, roasted peppers, coconut milk, brussel sprouts, kale, tomato, onion and eggs

What a difference a week (and free time) makes. All left over cash from this week was put back into savings and I'm starting fresh for my first full week in November. I can't believe I've been doing this for two months. Seeing my savings account grow is such a joy; I'm up $850!!

Thank you all for following me through this journey. I'm thrilled to see what happens next.

The danger of living with someone...

... is that they find their presents in the mail box. This is Stephen and I's first year of living together over the holidays and I discovered last night that sending their gifts to your home gives them a 50/50 chance of picking up their gift and asking you "What'd you get from ___?"

As a silly gift I adopted a manatee in Stephen's name (we love these aquatic tubbies). I had rosy visions of telling him Christmas day that he was now the proud papa of Brutus the giant sea cow. Unfortunately, what happened instead was this:

Stephen: Hey babe, what'd you get from "Save the Manatees"?

Me: Um.... (crap)... nothing...

Stephen: No seriously, it has your name on it. What is it?

Me: It's just something...

Stephen: Okay... something... something for me?

Me: Maybe...

::pause::

Me (breaking down, crying): Okay! It's one of your Christmas presents! Okay!? Now it's RUINED!!

Anyway, not the best gift giving moment considering I was crying about the ruined surprise. However, Stephen loved the gift and even posted on facebook about his new adoptive child.

So the lesson boys and girls? If you want to order your partner a present online have it sent to work so you don't have the same thing happen to you!

Budget recap (10/21-10/28)

Being so crazed with life and work actually cut way down on my spending-- probably because I was to busy to buy stuff. That's fine though, because the holidays are coming up and that always gets pricey. Anyway, here is my uneventful recap:

I went to 50/50 last night. Although it was really well acted (and Joseph Gordon-Levitt was hot hot hot even with a bald head), I was a little disappointed. Not sure how I thought they'd make cancer funny, but I wound up crying much more than I laughed.

I never ate out this week- unless of course you count copious lattes, a bag of potato chips and a rice krispie treat eating out...

Between Trader Joes and the farmers market we got: roasted peppers, tomatoes, cage-free eggs, avocados, onion, bread, salad mix, tomato, pasta, cat litter, cow's milk, almond milk, apples, bananas and potatoes.

Not too bad for my wallet, but next week I hope that I can say I spent my money while having fun instead of keeping it and being overworked.

Wedding inspiration

Over the weekend my good (gorgeous, stylish, hilarious, etc etc) friend Lynde got engaged. Just look at that rock! She's such a planner that the wedding research as already begun. As a bridesmaid that will take any excuse possible to look at wedding-related content, I have taken that as my cue to spend hours upon hours on these sites:

The real weddings on here are sublime. All the featured brides ooze class, creativity and style. The best kind of inspiration if you ask me.

Such a sophisticated site. All the real weddings are dreamy, but what keeps me coming back for more are the color inspiration board. So important in the beginning stages of planning!

Another great one for beautiful, real weddings. Plus, so many fun DIYs you can barely stand it. Is it wrong I want to do some of these for my home?

It may be self evident by my lack of posting, but I have been super flustered and distracted from blogging. It just seems like things keep stacking up on my to-do list where blogging is at the bottom. Sorry!

Yesterday Stephen's car was broken into. That was not awesome. What is awesome is my good friend getting engaged to her dream guy over the weekend. That's blissfully taken up a bit of my time (I mean, a girl has to buy and read every single bridal magazine in Powell's when her friend gets engaged, right?!). Throw on top of that a deadline lurking this Friday (gulp) and the horrors of graduate school (double gulp) and the mere thought of a post slips my mind.

I promise to lock it up and get back on the train... soon.

In the mean time, please tell me how you've been doing! I'd love to hear how you've been spending your time!

Quick tip (dining out)

I get quite a few emails wondering how I save money without nixing all dining out options besides the dollar menu (which for the record I think should be your last option when Armageddon comes, but I digress). I am a huge fan of the following tools:

groupon/living social/travel zoo: I use a coupon from these bad boys at least once a week.
happy hours: Portland is a happy hour utopia offering tons of gourmet food on the cheap. A lot of cities have similar deals. You can buy a book like Stephen and I or go online to find one close to you.
coupon books: We have the Chinook Book, but there are other examples for other cities. They have deals on local food, entertainment, fitness and even clothes.

These are the tools I use most often. I also really encourage thinking outside the box of where you eat. For example, food carts and tapas restaurants have some pretty amazing eats for not too much.

Keep the emails coming! I love getting more people in on saving money the fun way (mostly so I don't feel like a penny pinching loser)!

Ironically, a rough week at work meant that I stayed in a lot more than usual. I just wasn't in the mood to go tear up the town. Oh well, it worked out well for my budget. Take a look!

For those who have been following my budget for a while you know how big of a deal this is. Only $10.50?! One burrito at laughing planet, a tofu BBQ sandwich from a food cart, and a latte later in the week equals cheeeeeap.

From TJ's: 1/2 dozen cage free eggs, 2 types of pasta, tortilla chips, kettle corn, salsa, avocado, peaches, bananas, soy milk, cow's milk, chicken sausage, tofu sausage, bread, beer (kind of cheating for my alcohol budget-- opps), jam, seaweed snacks, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, and corn on the cob.

My book for the week. I have heard great things about this classic.

I've been getting through the office politics thanks to advice from my amazingly supportive friends, my eternally loving boyfriend and now my morning cup of tea. Weekend recap

My last post may have given the impression that I had a bad weekend. Not at all! It was fun-filled and relaxing all at the same time because we stayed in our neighborhood for our all activities. Here are my favorite photos of it all:

A Laughing Planet opened up in our building so of course we had to try it out!

A Southern Bowl for Stephen and a Che burrito for me. I love that Laughing planet has so many vegetarian options.

After dinner we walked to Veritable Quandary for some drinks. This is such a nice place to sit and have a drink because you can actually talk to the person you're with-- go figure.

A few too many drinks makes for silly photos on the walk home.

Saturday was actually nice in Portland (hallelujah!) so we celebrated by grilling on our back patio. I swear it felt like summer again...

My help at the grill is purely ornamental.

Darlings, now that we have the pant crisis under control (thank you all so much for your suggestions!!), I'd love to hear about how you spent your weekend. Did you do anything fun?

The green pant fiasco

I have a horrible announcement.

My favorite pair of green pants has been in a fatal laundry accident.

It all started like any other Sunday; Stephen and I puttering around doing chores. Then I heard, "Uh-oh. Babe..." Stephen had accidentally washed and dried a load of laundry with a pot of carmex lip balm. The salve was everywhere, staining almost everything. But nothing got it so bad as my cherished olive green pants.

At first I didn't react. "Oh well," I thought. "It was an accident. I'll just buy a new pair." Then reality grabbed me like the clutches of a cracked out demon. I couldn't buy a new pair! I can't shop for a year!!! At this point I may or may not have started to freak out.

You see, I had bought them at Anthro only a few months ago. They were originally $190 and I snagged them for only $70. They fit perfectly (skinny but not condom-like). Their color was a perfect olive so they went with everything. Needless to say, these pants went well before their time.

The silver lining in all this is that I am in a relationship with the best man in the world. Once he saw the pain ripping at my heart he chivalrously offered to buy me new green pants. He seemed a little shocked that pants cost $70 (I didn't have the heart to tell him the full retail cost), but the offer stands.

My original pants are no longer offered in the store or online (can't a girl catch a break?!) But no worries, I have a solution:

Darlings, will you help me transform this tragedy into triumph and find me new perfect pair of green pants!?!

Budget recap (10/1-10/7)

I'm into the second month of my budget. The week flew by and I really had to think hard about where all my money went. I'll tell ya, it's moments like that where I'm glad I have the envelopes. Without them I wouldn't have known is I spent $10 or $100!

Fro-yo and Toro Bravo. Let me tell ya, if you're from Portland or passing through you'd be missing out on something undeniably special if you didn't check out Toro. The food is otherworldly and the price is a steal for that level of quality.

This photo may make you ask two things. One: Donuts for entertainment? Or two: Geez, how many donuts did you buy?! The answer is that I threw a party for my good friend Lynde who loves donuts and mimosa. All the party food was $25, which in my opinion is a good price for a great afternoon with friends.

I know, I know. I suck. I drove way too much. But here I am again at the station, filling up. Le sigh.

Two glasses of wine at Nobel Rot and a bottle of Maryhill equals one good week.

I fill up my envelopes again today. Here's to another great week of watching my money!

Last night I participated in an American tradition: watching Monday night football. Okay, I may not have been a super willing participant but Stephen loves football (and the Buccaneers who played last night). I've never been much of a sports fan. I just don't understand what about watching grown men play a game is so appealing. Despite my better judgment I yielded to Stephen's request, threw on his jersey and had a beer. It ended up being fun, but it got me thinking about the things we do for the people we love. So darlings, I want to know...

My cat Lucas is one of the most social cats I have ever met and no where is this more evident than in his morning routine. He wakes up from sleeping on my pillow and follows me around the house as I get ready.

Budget recap (9/23-9/30)

This was an interesting week for my budget because I had left over cash from last week. I was acting like a pretty big high roller because of my fabulous weekend, yet I still had a little left over.

Stephen and I ate out at for a lunch and dinner while we were away, costing me about $35 total. Later in the week we went to sushi, costing me $15. The rest was spent on morning oatmeal and snacks at work.

Drinks at Maryhill were two bottles of wine. Okay... that's a lot of money (and booze), but the wine was incredible.

Ugh. I hate filling up. Hopefully this one will carry me through until mid-October. It was nice to see that I budgeted just enough gas money for the month. Good foresight if I do say so myself!

Thank God for Trader Joes! In addition to farmers market purchases (1/2 flat or berries, peppers, eggs, onion, potatoes, and pasta) we got salad, pork (Stephen), deli meat (Stephen), asparagus, tomato soup, beans, tortillas, seaweed snacks (my version of crack) and bananas. Say what?! Such a good deal!

Because it's the end of the month, I decided to roll my excess cash into savings instead of spending it. I'm starting clean today with my regular amounts. Wish me luck!

The Great Clothing Swap of 2011

I have the best friends in the whole world. When Robyn heard that I was giving up shopping she quickly organized a clothing swap. If you haven't heard of this before it's where ladies bring clothes/accessories that they no longer want and swap with friends. It's exactly like shopping but totally free. Plus, I got some amazing things from my ultra stylish friends!

If you want to have your own clothing swap you can check out the rules that Robyn made for ours:

1. Bring your stuff. This can include clothes, handbags, accessories, jewelry, nail polish or whatever you have worth trading. You can bring as much or as little as you feel like carrying.
2. Categorize items into the low, mid and high categories (or you can do this beforehand to save time). Use your discretion on this- high category includes name brand/high quality stuff where as the low category would be made up of more random accessories/t shirts, etc.
3. For each item you put into a category, you will get a corresponding color coded ticket to write your name on.
4. We will put all these tickets into a box. After all the items have been on display for about an hour, so you can try them etc., then we will begin to draw names out of the box. For instance if I submitted on item in the high category and a corresponding ticket with my name is pulled out of the box, I will get to select one item from the high category. There is also the option of choosing a combination of things from the other categories. 1 high ticket is worth 1 high item, 2 mid items or 4 low items. It works the other way too, so you can save up your low tickets and get something from the medium or high categories.

I had such an amazing weekend. Stephen and I drove out to The Dalles to see our favorite band, Counting Crows, play at Maryhill winery. It was simply amazing from start to finish. Here are some photos I took while we were away:

Getting there is half the fun. I love when Oregon's lush green landscape begins to melt away into these rocky rolling hills. Gorgeous.

Budget recap (9/17-9/23)

At the risk of sounding cocky, I have to say that I think I did super well with my budget this week. Sure, I blew nearly all of my monthly beauty budget, but I had to guys! I needed a hair cut! Other than that I really held back and was super conscious of my spending. Check out how I did:

Hair: $48 with tip for my new cut (with bangs!) from the wonderful Michelle at Mag Doll. Toner: $10

As you can see I went shopping not once but three times. I only was under by $4 from last week, but I feel like I made better use of my food. Next week's goal will be to spend less AND make good use of what I buy.

You're seeing that correctly: $10. I'm so proud! The coffee trick totally worked. Not getting lattes at work (and bringing my own snacks instead of buying candy) saved me at least $20. Crazy huh?

We went here as a group on Saturday for Stephen's birthday. I didn't sing, but the $14 for Stephen and I's entry was worth seeing my friends make fools of themselves.

I got these for a party I had with my girls yesterday. I'll tell you all about the party Monday, but I was shocked to think the cost of 2 BOTTLES was the same as two cocktails. Crazy pants...

It's a new week for my budget! I'm rolling over the extra dough from this week, so I may be a high roller next week. Come back and see!

In an effort to curb the great latte crisis in my dining out budget I bought creamer (vegan) and brought it to work. I plan to mix it in with the free crap they have here to make it more palatable.

Is it as delicious as my pumpkin spice soy latte? Not one tiny bit.

I was so caught up in Stephen's birthday extravaganza that I totally forgot to share my weekly wrap up of my budget. I thought that I would make it a regular Friday endeavor to keep me honest with my spending and allow you to see exactly what I get for my budgeted money. Here we go!

What surprised me the most about this budget was how much I actually got and how much of it is still in my fridge! It's making me think a lot more about when I buy groceries. This next week I'm trying spending money on smaller trips throughout the week so I don't waste money.

This was a really thought-provoking layout to make. I realized that I spent a bulk of my dining out money on lattes and snacks at work. What?! That's madness! This week I'm trying to change that behavior and only spend money on delicious real food.

I had so much fun getting drinks with Stephen this week. No regrets on this one, but I think next time I'll get the house wine instead of the $10 cocktail.

It was a very Ryan Gosling week for Stephen and I (no complaints here!). I thought both movies were awesome for very different reasons; both totally worth all my entertainment money for the week.

Ugh. I hate buying gas, but at least I won't need to do it for a week or two...

That's it! I thought I did pretty well, even though I spent every dime of my weekly allowances. Hopefully this week I can scale back a tad and have a little extra. I'll let you know how it went this Friday!

Today is Stephen's birthday!!! I am so excited to celebrate the man I love all weekend long. We kick it off tonight with presents and a fancy dinner out. Saturday we're watching ducks football and then going out drinking with friends. Stephen will be celebrating his youth on Sunday by running a 5k and I will be at the finish cheering him on.

A week ago my friend asked me if I wanted to run a 10k with her. I was hesitant since I haven't run farther than 3 miles since my half marathon. However, I wanted to push myself so I came out yesterday for the race anyway. I finished in an hour, which isn't fast but I felt great getting out there again. It was such a good reminder that showing up is half the battle.

Because credit cards remind me of Monopoly money, I figured that the best way to stick to my budget was to deal in cash as much as possible. So I made the above envelopes that fit in my wallet. Every Friday I will fill them with my allotted cash for the week. That's all I get. If by some miracle I don't spend all my money, that just means I have more for next week!

I also cut out a picture of Italy's famous Colosseum and put it in front of my credit card. Obviously I'll have to reach for it at times but seeing that photo will make me think twice.

I know, I know. I've been gone for a while. You may have thought that I went off the deep end because of my budget. Not so. I was in DC for Labor Day weekend (recap to come). The trip was fantastic... right until the end. My connecting flight from DC to Chicago was late and I missed my flight.

Because it was a "weather related issue" United Airline offered no compensation for hotel, food or even airline miles. United wouldn't even get us on the next flight. It was 9 p.m. when they told us that the earliest they'd fly us out was 3 p.m. the next day. The situation quickly disolved to me going slowly crazy waiting on standby and eating gross airport food. All in all I was in the Chicago airport 18 miserable hours.

Today I'm moving slow and having flash backs to the airport like a nightmare that follows you around once you wake. Please excuse the lack of posts while I recover my mental stability.

Thank you all for your comments about my year of no shopping. I wanted to answer a few questions my friends urgently texted me once they saw the news...

"You'll still shop for groceries right!?"

Of course! My entire budget is below to show I'm not starving myself in the name of sayings.

"No shopping at all? Why not have a small monthly budget?"

Sadly, I have very little self control. It's easier for me to do cold turkey than try to stay within margins. I can talk my way into a $200 pair of shoes in five minutes. It's just easier for me to say no from the start.

"What about eliminating other things? Why shopping?!"

When it came down to it, I realized that I had to choose between entertainment/meals out and shopping. Since I would rather have a drink with friends or go to a movie with Stephen over buying a new dress I cut shopping.

It's like Sophie's Choice!

Below is my monthly budget* (without boring you with rent, utilities, and the like). It feels a little intimate to share it here, but I'm hoping that it keeps me accountable.

Thanks again for your support and opinions around this decision. I can't wait for you to come with me this year to see how it all shakes out.

*I know that I am extremely blessed to have such a plush budget. I recognize that this is no where near a shoestring budget or one that many out-of-work Americans are forced to make for survival. I am grateful for my financial situation and am in awe of those who are able to live full, exciting lives on much less than this.

Stephen and I have quite a year of travel planned (already!) for 2012. We have two destination weddings to attend and one super-exciting, heart-pounding, two-week trip to Italy (!!!!) all happening before August.

Although these adventures are amazing, their a strain on the ol' bank account. That's why I've made a budget for the next year and cut out things that I don't really need... like shopping*.

If you know me or read this blog often you understand how difficult this will be. Therefore, I want to spend the next year using this space as away to keep me honest not just on shopping, but on my budget as a whole.

Over the next few days I'll share my monthly budget and my plans for how in the heck I'll do it all without going crazy.

If at any time you have suggestions please oh please let me know. I need all the help I can get!

Whew! Wedding season is officially over for 2011! Each wedding was wonderful, romantic, and so much fun; however, my body is feeling the effect of too many good times. That's why I'm resetting with a cleanse for the rest of the month.

If you feel the need to counteract all the summer fun feel free to join me. I am eliminating:

Caffeine
Alcohol
Sugar
Dairy
Gluten
(I'm already a vegetarian, but you meat eaters may consider taking that out also)

I am also increasing:

Water
Fresh fruits and veggies
Exercise (at least once a day)

Blow Out Bar review

In addition to reader requests, I have had a lot of interest from my friends about my experience at Blow Out Bar in downtown Portland. Below is exactly what I e-mailed a good friend when she asked me. I hope you find the honest opinion helpful!

Oh my gosh… I loved it. It was fast without being rushed and the girl I went to was super responsive to my request of looking polished without being overdone.

However, I will say that $35 for a hair do was a bit steep for my monthly pocket book. I was just having a really stressful week at work and thought that getting my hair done would make me feel better.

My final deliberation is this: Go to Blow Out Bar when 1) You need a pick-me-up before an event that you need to get excited for (despite whatever was getting you down) 2) There's a super-important event where you can’t afford to look average.

Birthday recap

My birthday fun did not end when I left the office and my cat-laden cubicle... I got home and was whisked away to Paley's Place where Stephen and I enjoyed a decedent meal for over three hours. The food was incredible, the atmosphere was romantic, and I had the best dining partner a girl could ask for.

Then after lovely gifts, we cuddled up on the couch with my favorite bottle of wine to watch True Blood (a guilty pleasure of mine that Stephen lovingly watched without complaint). It was a relaxing end to a truly wonderful day.

Thanks to all you who made my 24th year so amazing and who helped me ring in the 25th!

Birthday ambush

There is a constant joke in my office that I'm a cat lady (can't a girl show off photos of her cats like their her children anymore?!), but I could have never expected that this scene would be awaiting me when I came in for work. The lovely ladies in my group got in extra early to deck out my cubicle with more cat-inspired goodies than you can shake a tail at. Needless to say, I laughed until I cried.

This weekend whizzed by so fast I'm still unsure if today is really Monday. I can't wait to recap all the fun, but first I thought I'd share a photo from one of the engagement shoots I've been editing.

Technically this photo was a "mistake" that is over-exposed; however, I really like the way it turned out. Seeing it come through my editing queue made me smile because it serves as a great reminder that sometimes imperfect things are the most beautiful.

I am always a little nervous to spend money on trends. What if they go out next season and I wasted major money? Thank God for Etsy and wonderful vintage shops like Zia. Because of their awesome selection and totally manageable prices (each of these tops is $24!!) I can try out the sheer lace trend without any wallet guilt.

My stunning friend Ashley on her most recent visit.

Being a photographer with beautiful friends is bittersweet. On one hand, you have seemingly endless subjects to photograph. On the other, you're perpetually playing catch-up to edit said photos. I'm currently editing two engagement sessions at what feels like a snail's pace. I can't complain though; both couples are gorgeous, madly in love, and wonderful friends. Plus, it's sooo much fun!

Thanks to a friendly French hint from Etsy, I remembered that today was Bastille Day (French independence day). I accordingly spent the next hour mooning over several amazing French designers on the site. Here are my two favorites: Zephyr Graham Paris and TREES & CLOUDS.

Both of these dresses from TREES & CLOUDS are around $50. What a steal! Perfect for cocktails or weddings.
