I am perfectly aware that cruising centerpieces before we even have a venue is like running a marathon before you can crawl, but what can I say, I love details. A few weeks ago
I just started pinning everything I liked. What unfolded was a trend I didn't even see coming: I apparently love jars and bottles. Just check out my favorites to see what I mean:
Friends who have planned a wedding: what seemed to come first, the venue or the details?
Unmarried friends: what kind of look do you find yourselves drawn to?

I looked at both at the same time, really. I knew we were getting married in Tahoe so that helped with ideas for decor before finding a venue (as far as feel, etc). One thing is, don't get your sights toooo set on certain, specific things in case the venue you end up choosing has some weird restrictions - like no glass centerpieces or something - you never know, some places have strange rules.
I'm not sure how you're doing things, but one thing I found really important was my hubby & I made a list of the TOP 5 most important things to us for the day - food, photography, location, etc. - and make sure to budget for those things first. That way you don't start using up the budget with things that aren't as important to you in the end.
Email me if you need any help/advice. I remember most of my planning process like it was yesterday!!
Happy pinning! :o)
such pretty arrangements, all very organic and rich.
for me, i thought about the "feel" i wanted our wedding to have, then went for details and venue simultaneously. once we had a clear vision of a theme/time of day/feel, everything started to fit together.
hope you're enjoying it!
I love the mason jars with the flowers!! I think the details and venue can come together at once. You're looking at the details you like, and when looking for a venue those same likes/dislikes will come into play. You'll look for a venue that fits your style. Then once the venue is secured you can take a look at the details again and see if anything needs tweaked to mesh better together. Hope you're having fun planning and dreaming! :)
I would say find the venue first. It can help set the tone of the wedding. I've changed my mind on the details 20 times over since the venue was picked. But I know I have the right venue.
I also say start early! We were engaged Christmas 2010, and our wedding is October 12, 2019. I was surprised how many of the vendors were booked a year or more out.
I've also done a lot of research to help me find the vendors that will give me exactly what I want and for a good price. Don't always assume the people who charge the most are the best. Picking my vendors helped the details all come together. :)
Note that wedding dresses have to be ordered weeks if not months in advance if you buy it from a boutique. So don't wait until the last min. for that. I'm going shopping at the end of this month and the end of next month. EEEK!
Wedding planning has be fun and stressful. Make sure you stick to your guns and have the wedding YOU want. Everyone will have their opinions but the only ones that matter are yours and Stephens :)
YAY for wedding planning!!! Have you set the date???
PS: We have very similar wedding taste! Great minds think alike! ;)
I love this Etsy shop:

Mason Jars are my all-time favorite! I have done a few weddings/receptions (when I say done, I mean photographed), I always love taking pictures of all the things people come up with; wild flowers, sand and candles, pine sprigs, etc. All so beautiful! ---and they are cheap!
April,
Thanks for the link. I am in LOVE. 2019!? Girl how are you even keeping your composure!? We picked early 2013 and sometimes I feel like I'm going to burst with anticipation.
Thanks again lady!
Sara
Love all of these. I'm planning a wedding now and we did venue first even though I was doing details at the same time, but we're having ours at an 'old' hotel downtownand they provide a lot of the details so I now just have to choose things that go with their decor.
love this

I love using what I have in my garden for center pieces- Lucky we have growth all year round.
Ops... did I say 2019? I meant 2012. October 19, 2012... not October 12, 2019. I think I'm still loopy from surgery. haha.
We are having our wedding on a Friday and its saving lots! I kind of wish I had a brunch wedding too. I do love breakfast food. Yum! And it would also save some money.
We are having mini pies instead of a cake. I like pie so much more than cake! If you come across any good ideas for pie displays let me know! I still haven't figured out pintrest. It scares me a little.
Also, just another little note. I REALLY wanted to have the wedding in an old barn. But when the realities of me having to clean up and have everything back to normal after the wedding and no electricity... I'm SO glad we have a place that takes care of it all! Even though the barn would be beautiful, I'm glad no one has to worry about anything before or after our wedding! Especially me! This is where we are getting married http://www.musketridge.com/club/scripts/section/section.asp?NS=PW... it feels like outside with the windows and mountains but is still safe inside in case of bad weather (just my luck!)
April,
Haha AWESOME. SO glad you don't have to wait until 2019!!
I think I'm getting hit a little with realities myself. I had this vision of an extremely local, customizable venue. We found them but now I'm getting all uppity that they're not GIVING us a lot (eg. table linens and flatware). I think I need to come back down to reality and reset my priorities, you know? If custom matters I need to be okay with some elbow grease. If elbow grease is a no go, then I need to give up custom.
Thank you SO much for all the tips!
Sara
ps: LOVE the look of your venue!!!
I completely understand that struggle! I went through the same thing. I wanted so much of the customizable, vintage, and "green." But I decided it was more important to me to not have to worry about all of the details before and after. (I didn't have it in the budget for a wedding planner/coordinator who would have been able to help a lot all of the details). I totally admire brides who are able to take it all on.
Our venue takes care of the set up, clean up, offer a coat check, include tables, chairs, linens, waitstaff, a day of coordinator, bartenders and various candles/candle holders/vases that we can use all for $1000. It was an additional $1000 to have the ceremony there. We looked at another place closer to DC and they wanted $10,000 just for the location... nothing included. EEK!
I think you are smart to look at your priorities and figure out what is more important to you and Stephen now rather than later. No matter what, it will be beautiful and wonderful!!!! :)
I'm always happy to help if you need anything! Even if its just to vent about all of the stresses that come along with planning :) haha
Pick the venue first... Alot of places have restrictions so find one that doesn't have any :) You should never have to sacrifice anything on your wedding day... its your day so you should be able to make it how you wish.. Have an idea of the feel you want first then the details will flow... you can spend a life time looking at all the little details.. But remember to have fun with it because it is one of the funnest times in your life and it will be over before you blink :) Love you. Cant wait xoxo
Definitely bottles and jars! Simple floral and candles. Venue is a factor but details, details, details is what matters. I rather have people remember the detailed sentimental pieces to my wedding as oppose to where it was held.
If you know specific must-include items you'd want to have at your wedding, you can personalize the details and any venue to make it your own. I wouldn't be too picky about the venue but do check their restrictions. And I wouldn't be too hung up on the details if it stresses you out. As with everything, have fun with it!!! :)
